Homemade Equipment: How to make a sandbag

sandbag-bear-hug

I have recieved some questions over the last few days about how to make your own sandbag.  Here is a quick how-to.

What you need:

1. Army/Navy or canvas duffel bag. You can find these at your local army surplus store for about $20.

2. Duct tape, zip ties, heavy duty contractor bags, pea gravel. All this stuff can purchased at any hardware store.  The bags of pea gravel usually weigh between 40-50lbs.

Assembly:

1. Open up your bags of pea gravel and take out or add the desired amount of weight.  Place the excess pea gravel in a separate bag for later.  The bags of pea gravel I got from Lowe’s have room for about 8-10 more pounds.

2. Seal the bags of pea gravel with duct tape.  Then completely wrap the bag with duct tape.

3. Place two of the contractor bags around the wrapped bag of pea gravel and completely wrap with duct tape.  This should keep the bags of pea gravel from busting open during use.

4. Place the double wrapped bags into your canvas bag.  Close up the open end with a couple of zip ties and you’re ready to get busy.

My sandbag collection consists of a 40, 50, 70, and 90lb. bags.  I made all four of these bags above for around $100 bucks.

Check out my previous post about sandbag training.  I also have some other sandbag training videos here.

I hope you found this helpful.

Drop me a comment and let me know some of your favorite sandbag exercises.

  • Nice post Jamie, Im sure you can refer back to this one many times in the future.

I’ll add, if you dont have a surplus store around I picked up 3 on ebay for 16$ total (usally give a quantity discount)

    Good stuff!

Thanks for comment Joe. You can never go wrong with Ebay. I may try that next time I need some bags.

  • Damn that security code is tough to read.

Great article. I’ve made my own bags pretty much same way. I made 10lb filler bags though. I put the sand into a contractor bag, taped that off and then double wrapped and taped.

    Have fun!
