This one was pretty basic, max rounds of pushups, recline rows, and thrusters in 20 minutes.
Talk about bare bones training here. My blast straps are hung from the 2×6 rafters in my shed. Inccidentally, I do all types of pullups from these rafters as well. It’s not the most comfortable thing in the world to do pullups on but I get a hell of a grip workout in the process.
The rope is an old tow rope about 25ft. and 1″ in diameter thrown around the same rafters as the straps. Did I mention it was old? It’s worn to the point that it’s difficult to get a good grip while doing recline rows. But again, the grip strength developed from these two types of moves is invaluable. Grip work might be one of the biggest neglected aspects of training. People ask me all the time how to get big forearms. I simply tell them lift heavy sh$t!
The sandbag is a heavy bag of pea gravel wrapped in duct tape.
This training is far from pretty but it’s damn effective. All you need is some homemade equipment.
My buddy Joe Hashey and Jedd Johnson have put together and awesome DVD all about putting togther your homemade equipment collection on a budget. Trust me these guys are experts at making homemade equipment that is not only inexpensive but extremely effective at building tons of strength and muscle.

I haven’t had access to a traditional weight room for about a month now. While I miss pushing and pulling heavy barbells and dumbbells and can’t wait to get back to it, I’ve had some of my best training sessions in a long time in my backyard with my growing cache of homemade equipment!
I’m lucky to have a big backyard, quiet street, and a nice storage shed (which I now call The Strength Shed) to keep all of my toys. If you don’t have a nice size backyard or live in an apartment, take your training out to the parking lot or the street in front of your house. Don’t worry about traffic they’ll go around you! Who cares what your neighbors think! Most of my neighbors probably think I’m nuts but I couldn’t care less. One of my neighbors sits out on his front porch with his morning coffee and watches me train. I still haven’t been able to get him to join me…yet!
Don’t make excuses about not having a gym or enough room at home to train. If you want it bad enough you’ll find a way!
